As part of the “Nishizimawashi – Handmade paper exhibition” (July 30 - August 26), artisans from the Nishizima area (of Yamanashi) will introduce a Japanese tradition, a Gasen-shi* making experience.
The Nishizima Gasen-shi is produced by their individual process, using a unique fiber pulp. By varying the type of Nishizimawashi, and the thickness of the ink, the artist can create with brushstrokes a three dimensionality effect to the drawing.
Participants will form their own sheets using authentic Japanese sugeta (molds / tools), using a traditional sheet forming technique and a special Gasen-shi* material, which is produced in the Nishizima area.
*Gasen-shi, which originated in China, is the oldest type of Oriental paper still used for artwork. Both the Chinese and Japanese traditionally prefer this paper for calligraphy and for Chinese-style painting.
